Treatment is given within 5 – 7 days with fewer side effects than the standard six to seven week course with external beam radiation. This means less disruption to your schedule, less travel time and fewer copayments. Since radiation is limited to the tumor cavity, only a small portion of the breast will be treated and healthy tissue will be unaffected.

Therapy is done on an outpatient basis. No hospital stay is required.  Mammosite is targeted radiation therapy treatment for breast cancer.  It is a type of brachytherapy and may be an alternative to external beam radiation. A radiation source is placed inside the lumpectomy cavity (the space left when the tumor is removed) and delivers radiation to the area where cancer is most likely to recur.
